Crested Butte, Colorado, is considered one of the last great ski towns in North America. This gem is located on the western slope of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, and holds some of the steepest and most extreme skiing and snowboarding there is. In addition, this ski town is located about 4 hours driving from Denver, tucked away just 30 minutes from Gunnison, Colorado. Beginners Guide to Crested Butte, Colorado

Crested Butte has access to a good amount of beginner terrain. Firstly, if you’re just starting out and want to practice the basics, you’ll want to try the Aspen or Pine magic carpet located at the base area. After you feel comfortable with the basics, you can head over to the peach tree lift where you’ll find short and easy runs. From there, if you’re ready for a challenge you can head to the Red Lady Express lift. This lift takes you to some fun runs with a greater variety of terrain. Something we love about this lift is how wide open the skiing is, which is great for families looking to take their little ones on some longer runs.

Intermediate Skier and Riders Guide

If you’re an intermediate skier or rider, Crested Butte has a lot of terrain to offer you. Well over 57% of the resort’s terrain is designated for intermediate riders. The first place we recommend going to are the blue runs underneath CB’s Prospect and Gold Link Lifts. These runs are typically shorter in length but are steep enough to be considered a blue. Secondly, if you’re an intermediate skier or rider that wants to try more difficult terrain, we recommend heading over to the Paradise Bowl. To get there, take the Silver Queen Express Lift from the base of the mountain. Once at the top, keep an eye out for navigational signs to lead you to the bowls. This area of the mountain is a great place to take laps on all day with your friends and family.

Advanced/ Expert Skier and Riders Guide

Although Crested Butte Mountain Resort doesn’t have a large percentage of expert terrain,  don’t underestimate the extreme skiing available on the rocky, cliff-baring runs of the mountain. For this reason, if you’ve never skied or ridden the expert terrain, you should consider taking a CB Steeps lesson with a guide from the resort. The expert terrain varies throughout the resort. If you’re looking to introduce yourself to cliffs and rocks, we recommend heading over to the North Face and Headwall. These two spots have small cliff drops and wide-open runs to offer. If you want even more advanced skiing, we recommend heading over to the Teocalli and Paradise Bowls. There, you’ll find bowls, shoots, tight trees, and big cliffs.
